Body Mass Index (BMI) is an easy mathematical way to calculate the ideal healthy weight as per your height and weight. BMI is weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in metres. BMI value makes it easier to categorise a person as underweight, healthy, overweight or obese.
BMI does not measure body fat but provides an estimated value of ideal body fat a person must have to maintain a healthy weight. For people above 20 years of age, BMI interpretation helps with categorising people of all body types and ages.
In general, people with a BMI value below 18.5 are considered underweight, 18.5-24.9 are considered healthy, 25.0-29.9 are considered overweight and 30.0-above are considered obese.
