What signs would a person suffering from lymphatic cancer exhibit?
Lymphatic cancer is cancer of the lymphatic system, which usually presents in the form of swellings in the areas where lymph nodes or lymphatic organs are present. General symptoms include fever and weight loss and based on the site of the tumours and metastases, the symptoms can include pain, nausea, vomiting and neurological symptoms when involving the brain.

Lymphatic cancer, also known as lymphoma, refers to a group of cancers that affect the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is a vital part of the immune system, comprising lymph nodes, lymph vessels, and organs such as the spleen and thymus. Its primary function is to help the body fight infections and diseases. In this article, we will discuss the spread of lymphoma within the body. We will also explain the symptoms of lymphatic cancer.

How does lymphoma spread within the body?

Lymphoma occurs when there is an abnormal growth of cells in the lymphatic system. These cells, called lymphocytes, start to divide and multiply uncontrollably, leading to the formation of tumours. There are two main types of lymphoma: Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL).

Hodgkin lymphoma is characterised by the presence of Reed-Sternberg cells, which are large, abnormal cells found in the lymph nodes. This type of lymphoma often spreads from one group of lymph nodes to another in a predictable manner. It can also involve other organs in later stages. Hodgkin lymphoma is relatively rare, accounting for about 10% of all lymphomas.

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a more diverse group of lymphomas, comprising numerous subtypes. Unlike Hodgkin lymphoma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma can involve various types of lymphocytes and can arise from different areas of the lymphatic system. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is more common than Hodgkin lymphoma, and its progression is often less predictable.

What are the signs and manifestations of lymphoma?

Symptoms of lymphoma may include swollen lymph nodes, fatigue, unexplained weight loss, night sweats, fever, and itching. However, the specific symptoms can vary depending on the type and stage of the cancer.

Some common symptoms of lymphatic cancer include persistent fever, unexplained weight loss, general or local swelling in lymph nodes and excessive sweating.

However, when the lymphoma spreads to other parts of the body, people may experience symptoms that are specific to the area. So, when the lymphoma reaches the gastrointestinal tract, the symptoms can be ‘pain or discomfort, anorexia, weight loss, nausea and/or vomiting, occult GI bleeding, and/or early satiety’. Likewise, when the lymphoma reaches the central nervous system, the symptoms can be ‘headache, lethargy, focal neurologic deficits, seizures, paralysis, spinal cord compression, or meningitis’.

In conclusion, lymphoma can spread throughout the body through lymphatic circulation. Hence, lymphoma does not have specific symptoms but mostly shows as per the area affected.

How is lymphoma diagnosed?

Diagnosis of lymphoma typically involves a combination of physical examination, imaging tests (such as CT scans or PET scans), and a biopsy of an affected lymph node or organ. Treatment options for lymphoma depend on several factors, including the type, stage, and overall health of the patient. Common treatment approaches include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and stem cell transplantation.

To find out if someone has lymphoma, doctors perform a test called an open lymph node biopsy. They look at the appearance, proteins, and cells in the lymph node tissue under a microscope. While doctors may use other tests like fine-needle aspiration or core needle biopsy at first, these methods don’t give enough tissue to confirm lymphoma, especially Hodgkin lymphoma, which requires finding special cells called Reed-Sternberg cells.
