What are the symptoms of hyperthyroidism?

Medically Reviewed by Checkmark Medically Reviewed By: Dr. Sravanthi Sunkaraneni

Hyperthyroidism sometimes mimics other health problems, making its diagnosis difficult. The signs and symptoms of hyperthyroidism include cardiac problems such as arrhythmia or irregular heartbeat, tachycardia or rapid heartbeat, and palpitations. Some of the psychological issues include feeling shaky, tremors, difficulty in sleeping, nervousness, anxiety and irritability. Other symptoms are unintentional weight loss, increased appetite, sweating, increased sensitivity to heat, fatigue, muscle weakness, Vision changes, thin, warm and moist skin, thinning of hair, goitre or enlarged thyroid gland, changes in bowel patterns, and changes in menstrual pattern, and bulging of the eyes (seen with Graves’ disease).

There can be different symptoms of hyperthyroidism, which can affect your whole body. However, it is not necessary that every patient experiences all the symptoms. A patient may suffer from some of these symptoms and not others. Also, many of the symptoms clash with other diseases. Therefore, it is necessary to consult a doctor and get the blood tests done in order to make the diagnosis. Antithyroid drugs, radioactive iodine, beta blockers and surgery can treat hyperthyroidism.
