After an appendectomy, there are certain post-operative recommendations and advisories for the patient to promote healing and avoid any complications.
What are the post-operative instructions for an appendix removal surgery?
The patients are advised to follow the below-mentioned post-operative recommendations for appendectomy:
- Regularly record the temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiration, especially after the initial days of the surgery.
- If there are no complications with the surgery, you can resume your daily activities soon after the surgery. However, even though early mobility is ideal, you should be cautious with your movements so that you don’t strain your abdominal muscles.
- If you have external stitches, make sure to get them removed as and when asked to if they are not dissolvable.
- Follow the dietary advice as given by your doctor. Initially, doctors recommend a bland diet. They can change it eventually according to the tolerance and healing of your body.
- You can expect some constipation due to narcotic pain medications. A mild laxative along with fibre supplementation is recommended for the first few days.
- You should drink plenty of water to help prevent constipation.
- Rest adequately as the recovery is slower if the body is not getting proper rest.
- You should also avoid lifting heavy objects and strenuous exercises after an appendectomy. However, after a few days, you can slowly resume normal activities.
How should I sleep after the appendectomy?
It is recommended to sleep on your back or on your side after an appendix removal. You should not sleep on the stomach after the surgery as this position can put pressure and affect the incisions. It can also hurt your spine and can also pressurize the hip area.
While sleeping on your side, place a pillow between both legs to prevent your pelvis from rolling. Rest a pillow against your body to provide support for the lower abdomen and while sleeping on your back, place a pillow under the knees to relieve the pressure from your lower back. Put a neutral size pillow under your neck.
