Diabetes mellitus refers to a group of diseases that affect how your body uses blood sugar (glucose). The early symptoms of type 2 diabetes are mostly unnoticeable, whereas, with type 1 diabetes, the symptoms are usually visible quickly, in a matter of days or a few weeks. They are much more severe, too.
Both types of diabetes have some warning signs like feeling hungry even if you are eating, extreme fatigue, increased thirst, blurred vision, frequent urination, slow healing of cuts or bruises, etc. Some other symptoms include dry and itchy skin and frequent yeast infections or urinary tract infections among women, and decreased sex drive, erectile dysfunction, decreased muscle strength, etc. among men.
There are certain symptoms, which are mostly seen in a particular type of diabetes. Yeast infections that can grow in any warm, moist fold of skin like in-between fingers and toes, under breasts, in or around sex organs, slow-healing sores or cuts, and tingling or numbness in your feet or legs are some of the very common symptoms of type 2 diabetes.
Among the patients of type 1 diabetes, unexplained weight loss, nausea and vomiting, etc. are some of the very evident symptoms. Presence of ketones in the urine is also a symptom of type 1 diabetes. Ketones can build up in your blood to dangerous levels, which can lead to a possibly life-threatening condition called diabetic ketoacidosis.
