Can Vitamin D play a role in the prevention of cancer?

But we are now also recognizing that many cells in the body, especially the kidneys, can activate vitamin D, and there is mounting evidence that the function of vitamin D is to help regulate cellular growth. Some evidence suggests that calcitriol helps prevent cancer progression by slowing the growth of new blood vessels in cancerous tissue, increasing cell differentiation, and reducing cancer cell death by reducing cell proliferation and metastases. Studies indicate that higher blood levels of vitamin D are part of the prevention of many deadly cancers, including colon, breast, and prostate cancer, to name a few.
It’s important to note that while there may be some evidence suggesting a link between vitamin D deficiency and cancer, other factors such as advancing age, genetics, lifestyle, diet, and environmental exposures also play significant roles in cancer development.
