Urinary tract infection is caused by bacteria from stool entering the urinary tract. UTI can start anywhere from the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra.

The infection is often curable but becomes serious if the bacteria reach the kidneys. Once bacteria reach the kidneys, they can reach organs through the bloodstream. This scenario can be dangerous and life-threatening as the microbes can damage the organs completely.

In this article, we have discussed how UTI is an infectious disease that is not specific only to women. Men can also suffer from UTIs. However, the incidence of UTI is more in females in comparison to males.

Does UTI happen only to females?

No. UTI happens to males as well. However, the infection spreads more in females. Research published in 2018 shows that females are at a higher risk of developing UTIs than males. Each woman has a 60% lifetime risk of developing UTI. Whereas men have only a 13% lifetime risk of developing UTI.

From the available statistics, it is clear that UTIs affect women more than men. The reason is their urethra is short and close to the vagina. This provides microbes a chance to populate in the bladder and kidneys. UTI happens less in males in comparison to females.

Why UTI happens less in males?

Females are more prone to UTIs. However, males also suffer from UTIs. But their cases are fewer than females. The reason is males have a longer urethra than females. A longer urethra does not provide microbes enough chance to populate and spread the infection.

In males, it is difficult for bacteria and fungi to reach the bladder and spread the infection. Whereas this is not the case with females.

How is UTI treated?

People with UTIs often need antibiotics and painkillers to treat the infection. Also, following a healthy lifestyle can control the severity of the symptoms.
