Is there any proven way to prevent ovarian cancer?

Just In
Not Exactly. It is not possible to prevent ovarian cancer. The main cause is its late-stage nature. Due to risk factors like age, family history, genetics, and other incurable diseases, it cannot be avoided. However, making adjustments to one's lifestyle, diet, and nutrition may help. Further, physical activity and quitting smoking after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer can have a significant impact on quality of life.

Not exactly. There is no known way of preventing ovarian cancer. The reason mainly lies in the fact that ovarian cancer is a late-stage condition. However, some studies have shown that making lifestyle, dietary and nutritional changes in life may prevent and improve the survival of ovarian cancer patients.

Ovarian cancer does not have symptoms that can suspect a woman of abnormal cell multiplication in ovaries. Also, most of the risk factors cannot be prevented and have made ovarian cancer common among older women. These risk factors are age, family history, genetics, another health disease, no pregnancy etc. On the contrary, higher physical activity and no smoking after the diagnosis of ovarian cancer can help women with ovarian cancer live a quality life.

However, the relation between diet and ovarian cancer is still a topic of contemplation. While many studies promote dietary changes to reduce the risk of ovarian cancer, some studies show no connection between diet and ovarian cancer. That being the case, a study has provided limited evidence of diet quality preventing ovarian cancer. This study suggests that a high-quality diet lowers the risk of endometrial cancer, a known precursor of ovarian cancer.

Besides this, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website has provided a list of ways that can reduce the risk of ovarian cancer. The suggested methods of using birth control pills, undergoing tube litigation, giving birth and breastfeeding also come up with their own side effects. Hence, the website clearly mentions that the suggested ways ‘are not recommended for everybody’. Further research is needed to understand if ovarian cancer is a lifestyle-related disease.
