Not always. If there is no pregnancy tissue left in the womb, no treatment is needed. However, consulting a gynaecologist is vital. If the tissue comes out completely after a miscarriage, it is called a complete miscarriage and no intervention is needed.

However, in case of a missed or an incomplete miscarriage, NHS gives us a several options.

If the miscarriage occurs in the first trimester, a woman is asked to wait for 7 to 14 days so that the leftover tissue can pass out naturally. If the pain and bleeding don’t start within this span of time, or the condition is getting worse, the woman must consult her doctor and get another scan. Also, a confirmatory scan is vital to confirm the completion of miscarriage.

Another option is medical management, in which the doctor prescribes a medicine that can induce the cervix to open for the tissues to pass out. The symptoms shown will be similar to that of heavy periods, such as cramping and heavy vaginal bleeding. If the bleeding doesn’t start after 24 hrs, consult the doctor.

The last option is surgical removal in cases of continuous heavy bleeding, infection of the tissues or the failure of the other two methods. In surgery, a suction device is used to remove any remaining tissue in the womb. Dilation and curettage (D&C) is a surgical procedure to remove tissue from inside your uterus. In a D&C, dilation refers to opening the cervix; curettage refers to removing the contents of the uterus. Curettage may be performed by scraping the uterine wall with a curette instrument or by a suction curettage (also called vacuum aspiration).
