How does dairy effect blood glucose level?

Generally, milk and other dairy foods have a low glycaemic index (GI) as the GI effect of the natural sugar in milk or lactose is moderate. Similarly, the milk protein present in the milk decreases the emptying rate of the stomach. The glycaemic index is a value that helps one measure the amount of blood sugar raised by a specific food. Foods are labelled into three categories based on the glycaemic index, namely Low, Medium and High, as per the ranking on a scale of 1-100.

However, because of the presence of lactose, the effect of dairy products can differ from person to person, especially in gestational diabetes. 

According to a study in Iran, it is necessary to find an appropriate dietary pattern, which includes fruits and dairy products that help pregnant women in preventing gestational diabetes mellitus. However, further clinical trials and prospective studies will be needed to confirm the results of this study.

How can I consume dairy with gestational diabetes?

A balanced and healthy diet is necessary for a pregnant mother and her neonate. A woman needs nutritious products like milk and other dairy products during gestational diabetes. If the mother can’t tolerate lactose at all, she must avoid dairy and its products during gestational diabetes. Since dairy products are rich in protein, calcium, and phosphorus, better choices shall be made while consuming dairy.

The pregnant mother must prefer low-fat or non-fat dairy products. Avoid yogurt with added sugar or artificial sweeteners. Do not consume more than 30g of portion size of cheese as it is high in fat and salt. Remember, as cheese comes in various types, it is important to choose the ones less in fat. 

Consume semi-skimmed milk instead of whole milk. Lower-fat milk has the nutrients of whole milk, including calcium, but is low in fat. Remember, always check the label before buying any dairy product. Moderation is necessary, but your diet depends on your condition. Restrict any form of sugar if your sugar level is very high. Therefore, it is necessary to consult a dietician for gestational diabetes and get a diet curated for yourself that includes dairy.
