How to choose between angioplasty and bypass surgery?

Medically Reviewed by Checkmark Medically Reviewed By: Dr. Sravanthi Sunkaraneni

Both angioplasty and heart bypass surgery are medical procedures that unclog blocked arteries. Arteries are blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood in the body.

Angioplasty seems preferable when the blockage is in a small area and can be treated through a minimally invasive method. However, it is not a permanent solution. It often does not solve the cause of the blockage. As per the Medanta Hospital website, 15-20% of angioplasty cases might be at the risk of narrowed arteries again and can eventually need bypass surgery. Bypass surgery is an invasive procedure and is preferable when the blockage is in multiple areas or in a large artery.
