What kind of complications can be there during angiography?
An angiogram often does not result in complications. When they occur, they are usually minor and occur at the site of entry of the catheter or due to allergic reactions to the dye and can be easily managed and reversed. Serious complications are rare, and the benefits of the test usually outweigh the risks.

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in India. Due to this, there is a high demand for diagnostic and treatment plans that can find and treat the condition at an early stage. Angiography is one of the simplest diagnostic tools that easily shows the location of the blockage in the blood vessel. As the cases of cardiovascular diseases are soaring high, a diagnostic tool like angiography makes it easy for doctors to initiate a quick diagnosis. In this article, we will discuss whether angiography is a serious procedure.

Is angiogram serious?

Angiogram procedure or angiography is not serious but generally a safe procedure with a ‘no’ to ‘small’ risk of complications. The whole process usually takes 30 minutes to a few hours. During angiography, a doctor inserts a thin flexible tube called a catheter into an artery to reach and analyze the area that they need to examine. Once the doctor sets the catheter, they inject a dye into the catheter to highlight the target area. Later, images are taken as the dye flows through the target area.

Minor side effects such as bruising, soreness, infection, a small bump or blood clot near the location where the doctors make the cut, etc., are common. Some other minor allergic reactions like rash, itch, or hives, renal damage, hot flushes, burning sensation, etc., can also be there. However, these recover in a short span. A doctor suggests this procedure only when the benefits outweigh the potential risks.

Is an angiography a surgery?

No. Angiography that produces angiogram images of the blocked blood vessels is not surgery. It is a non-surgical and minimally invasive procedure that informs the exact location of the blockage within blood vessels. The procedure also allows doctors to conduct angioplasty and reduce blockage in case this treatment is suitable for the patient.

Angiography is only a diagnostic tool that helps doctors prepare further treatment plans depending upon the extent of blockage in the blood vessel.
