Research suggests that even though the trends in disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) have decreased, the burden of incidence of appendicitis increased from 1990 to 2019. The appendix’s small size makes it prone to swift inflammation and potential rupture, which can impact nearby organs. In the event of a burst appendix, infectious agents can disseminate within the abdominal cavity, potentially leading to peritonitis, which involves inflammation of the abdominal lining. If the infection spreads to the bloodstream, it can result in life-threatening sepsis. Therefore, surgery becomes imperative. However, appendectomy exhibits a low morbidity and mortality rate, depicting a high success rate.
How long is a typical hospital stay after an appendectomy?
The duration of stay after an appendix removal surgery depends on the type of procedure performed and the patient’s individual condition.
Appendectomy can be performed using either an open method or laparoscopy. In cases where early diagnosis is achieved, the surgery is generally considered safe, and patients typically experience a recovery period of a few weeks. The usual length of hospital stay ranges from one and a half to two days, and in select instances, the procedure can be conducted on a daycare basis. Additionally, if a patient is a high-risk or comorbid patient, the length of stay may extend as per the condition.

Yes. Like any surgical intervention, appendectomy or appendix removal surgery entails inherent risks. However, the complications arising from appendectomy are infrequent occurrences. The appendix removal surgery can lead to certain after-effects. Potential complications can include bleeding, bruising, infection at the surgical site, the development of hernias, blood clots, residual stump, etc. However, serious complications, such as damage to neighbouring organs like the bladder or intestine, are exceptionally rare. Also, this can affect the driving or flying ability of the patient after the surgery.
