What is a urinary tract infection?
A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection of the urinary system. The urinary system includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. Most infections involve the lower urinary tract — the bladder and the urethra.
If an infection is limited to the bladder, it can be painful and annoying. Serious UTI spreads to the kidneys. Healthcare providers often treat urinary tract infections with antibiotics. You can also take steps to lower the chance of getting a UTI in the first place.
How is prostatitis and urinary tract infections (UTIs) similar?
Not exactly. Both Prostatitis and urinary tract infections affect the urinary system. So, both can seem similar. However, these conditions are different. Prostatitis affects the prostate gland and then spreads to the reproductive organs. Whereas UTI can start from kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. However, most infections affect the lower urinary tract which included the bladder and the urethra.
