How is osteoarthritis different from rheumatoid arthritis?

The main difference between osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis lies in their cause. Osteoarthritis is the gradual wearing down of cartilage in the joints and mostly occur in old age, females, obesity, joint injuries, repeated stress on joints, genetics, etc. Whereas rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that can occur at any age.

Among various risk factors of osteoarthritis, old age is the most common risk factor. Its symptoms include joint pain, stiffness in the morning, muscle weakness around joints, deformed joints, and cracking or creaking of bones which usually occurs in the larger joints.

In rheumatoid arthritis, the body’s immune system attacks joints to induce inflammation that usually involves the smaller joints. The symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis include pain, stiffness, swelling and inflammation in the joints along with bumps or nodules in the elbows and knuckles.
