How do bacteria enter the urinary tract?

What causes urinary tract infection?
There are different types of bacteria that cause urinary tract infection. Because of female anatomy, women are more prone to develop UTI than men. Issues in the urinary tract, pregnancy, menopause and poor hygiene routine are some of the other causes of UTI.

Bacteria is a type of unicellular microorganism which have cell walls but no cell organelles. Also, bacteria have organized nuclei that have the power to cause disease in human beings.

The disease-causing bacteria produce harmful toxins/chemicals that can damage human cells to make humans ill. Some bacteria can directly damage the tissues.

UTIs happen when bacteria from the skin or rectum enter the urethra and infect the urinary tract. UTI mostly affects the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra.

The most common type of UTI is is a bladder infection (cystitis) and kidney infection (pyelonephritis).

Which bacteria causes UTI?

There are different types of bacteria that cause UTIs. However, a research paper published in 2015 has shared a few names of bacteria that are known to spread UTIs among people. These names include Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Enterococcus faecalis, and Staphylococcus saprophyticus

Are women more likely to develop UTIs than men?

Yes. A research published in 2018 informs that women have a lifetime risk of developing UTI which is 60% whereas for men it is only 13%. Women are at greater risk of developing UTI than men because their urethra is shorter and closer to the vagina.

How do bacteria enter the urinary tract?

Urine contains fluids, salts, and waste products but is sterile or free of bacteria, viruses, and other disease-causing organisms. A UTI occurs when bacteria from another source, such as the nearby anus, get into the urethra. The most common bacteria found to cause UTIs is Escherichia coli (E. coli).

What are the triggers of UTI?

The available evidence does not list all the triggers of UTI. However, scant research papers have discussed probable risk factors of UTI. These include:

  • female anatomy
  • being sexually active
  • consuming birth control pills
  • menopause
  • issues in the urinary tract
  • blockage in the urinary tract
  • suppressed immune system
  • using a catheter to urinate
  • urinary surgery

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website has discussed a few more risk factors for UTIs. These include:

  • a history of UTI
  • changes in the microbial environment inside the vagina
  • pregnancy
  • age
  • structural changes in the urinary tract such as enlarged prostate
  • poor hygiene routine
