What is the difference between fibroids and ovarian cysts?
The basic difference between the two conditions is that ovarian cysts are specific to ovaries, while fibroids develop in the muscular layer of the uterus. Cysts are fluid-filled sacs, whereas the fibroids are hard non-cancerous masses that can be present inside or outside the uterine wall.

Even though fibroids and ovarian cysts sound familiar, and may show similar symptoms, cysts and fibroids have very different characteristics.

What are fibroids?

Fibroids are the most common tumors of the reproductive tract. They develop in the uterus and are made of smooth muscle cells and fibrous connective tissue. They are almost always noncancerous or benign.and cancerous fibroids are very rare.

Their size can vary from person to person and in one person if more than one fibroid is present. Its symptoms include pelvic pain, prolonged periods, heavy periods and bleeding between periods. They are usually of three types- namely, subserosal fibroids, intramural fibroids, and submucosal fibroids. The etiology of fibroids is unknown, and genetics seem to play a role.

What are ovarian cysts?

An ovarian cyst forms when the sac in which eggs grow does not break open, and the fluid remains inside the sac forming a cyst in the ovary. This cyst is called a follicle cyst. Normally, the sac dissolves once the egg is released. However, sometimes the sac does not dissolve and collects fluid to form a cyst. This type of cyst  is called a Corpus Luteum cyst. Other cysts in the ovaries are dermoid cysts, cystadenomas and endometriomas.

What are the main differences between fibroids and ovarian cysts?

Both fibroids and ovarian cysts are common conditions of the female reproductive tract. Even though few symptoms are the same for the two conditions, their causes, complications and treatments are completely different.

Fibroids develop on the uterus while cysts are specific to the ovaries. The compositions of both of these are also different. Cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop inside or on the surface of the ovary. And fibroids are the noncancerous masses that may develop in the muscular wall of the uterus.

If you are diagnosed with uterine fibroids but do not have any symptoms, you usually do not need any treatment. If symptoms develop, your doctor will decide the treatment required. The treatment for ovarian cysts will depend on the type of the cyst. Most simple cysts do not require treatment, other types may require treatment even if you have no symptoms and it is best to consult a doctor. You can manage both of these conditions through monitoring and treatment by a doctor or gynecologist.
