Does lung cancer always come back?

Not always. If not all of the cancer cells were eliminated during the surgical management, lung cancer may occasionally recur. Furthermore, relapse might happen if lung cancer is discovered at an advanced stage or if it has spread to distant organs, where it undergoes uncontrollable multiplication.

Not always. In some cases, lung cancer can relapse if all the cancer cells were not killed during treatment, and some remain within the body. A study has shown that up to 24% of people suffer from lung cancer recurrence post-surgery.

It happens due to the ability of cancer cells to separate from the tumour mass and are therefore missed during surgery. Also, cancer cells mask themselves allowing them to escape treatment. Such behaviour of cancer cells makes cancer a deadly disease.

The chances of lung cancer recurrence are also greater when the condition is diagnosed at an advanced stage. In the later stages, the cancer cells are grown too much and spread to distant parts of the body due to which it becomes difficult to find and kill each of them. These missed cancer cells can multiply uncontrollably and cause relapse of  the lung cancer.
