Ovarian cysts normally occur due to hormonal changes and resolve on their own. However, sometimes, a few risk factors, such as PCOS, endometriosis, etc., increases the chances of their occurrence. In this article, we will discuss whether all ovarian cysts need surgery, when is surgery needed, and what are the types of surgery for an ovarian cyst.

Do all ovarian cysts need surgery?

Not all ovarian cysts require surgery. In fact, many ovarian cysts will go away on their own without any treatment. However, treating ovarian cysts depends on several factors, such as size, type, and symptoms.

Some ovarian cysts may require surgery. Whereas in other cases, doctors can monitor the cysts with regular ultrasounds or treated with medication. They will determine the best course of treatment on the basis of the symptoms and the size of the cyst.

Your doctor may recommend surgery if the ovarian cyst is large, persistent or causing symptoms. They may also suggest for surgery if there is a suspicion of ovarian cancer. The surgery may involve removing only the cyst or the entire ovary if necessary.

In some cases, a minimally invasive procedure called laparoscopy can be used to remove the cyst. Laparoscopy is a surgical technique that involves making small incisions and using a small camera to view the ovaries and surrounding tissue.

You must consult a doctor if you have an ovarian cyst. They can guide the best treatment options for you.

When is surgery needed for an ovarian cyst?

You may require surgery if the cysts cause severe symptoms or complications or if there is suspicion of cancer. The need for surgery can depend on various factors, including the size of the cyst, whether it is growing or persistent, and if it is complex or has solid components.

The course of treatment for an ovarian cyst typically depends on the cyst’s size and nature, appearance, accompanying symptoms, and the patient’s age. Doctors may recommend you for immediate surgical intervention if the cysts are large or are causing severe pain, discomfort and tissue damage.  Complex cysts are more likely to be cancerous and may need to be tested for cancer. Additionally, ovarian cysts may cause complications such as bleeding or infection, which may require surgery.

What are the surgical options for an ovarian cyst?

The available surgical options are laparoscopy and laparotomy. Doctors perform laparoscopy for small, non-cancerous cysts. During this procedure, a small incision is made near the navel, and a small instrument is inserted into the abdomen to remove the cyst.

On the other hand, laparotomy is recommended for large cysts that may be cancerous. This procedure involves surgically removing both the cyst and the affected ovary. In cases in which there is a diagnosis of cancerous cysts, the doctor may recommend hysterectomy depending on the individual’s condition. However, the decision for the type of surgery should be made on a case-by-case basis by the doctor.
