The risk of Vitamin D deficiency increases significantly with age. Reasons for this are many.
With age, our skin thickness reduces thereby reducing our ability to synthesize Vitamin D from sunlight. Many old people also have diminished sunlight exposure.
Due to decreased dietary intake, impaired intestinal absorption and impaired hydroxylation in the liver and kidneys, the body doesn’t get enough Vitamin D from the diet too. This often leads to soft and broken bones and a feeling of muscle weakening and fatigue.
If you are above 40, you should get your Vitamin D level checked once every three months.
