Does a lack of Vitamin D increase the risk of heart disease?
Although vitamin D deficiency affects the bones and muscles majorly, there appears to be a link between vitamin D deficiency and heart disease. There is an increased risk of high blood pressure, inflammation in the blood vessels, heart failure and cardiovascular events including stroke in people with low vitamin D than those with normal levels.

The major effect of Vitamin D deficiency is weakening of bones and muscles, but it in recent years, studies have shown that Vitamin D deficiency may predispose the body to high BP, chronic blood vessel inflammation, and congestive heart failure.

Some studies have linked low Vitamin D levels with increased arterial stiffness, endothelial dysfunction, and fatal strokes among patients with cardiovascular disease.

As per a study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism[1], researchers found that death from stroke or other cardiovascular event doubled when blood levels of Vitamin D fell below 50 nmol/L.
