Yes. Thyroid disease can lead to hair loss if the condition is severe and is not treated. When thyroid does not produce hormones properly, it affects processes in the body. One of such processes is the development of hair at the root.
Severe and prolonged hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism can lead to hair loss. This hair loss can spread to the entire scalp rather than discrete areas. The hair appears uniformly sparse. Hair can regrow after successful treatment of the thyroid disorder. However, the process can take several months and may be incomplete.
Some of the common thyroid conditions like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease are autoimmune disorders that can sometimes cause hair loss. Irregular functioning of T3 and T4 can disturb the regrowth. One can notice thinning of hair over time, without hair replacement. Hypothyroidism can also affect your eyebrows, body hair, and eyelashes, too.
