Managing obesity involves lifestyle changes such as increased physical activity, healthier eating habits, increased physical activity, and in certain cases, medical interventions like surgery or medications.  

Why do people stress eat?

Stress eating, known as emotional eating, involves people turning to food as a coping mechanism to help them feel better and possibly help reduce anxiety and stress. Certain ongoing research indicates that certain life events lead to feelings of pressure, the inability to control important outcomes, task overload, etc. There is a likelihood of increased eating as a means to cope with these negative emotions. These stressful triggers could increase the likelihood of consuming more food as a way to cope with the emotional situation. 

Does stress contribute to obesity?

Yes, stress could cause weight gain. But, the vice versa can happen too.

Firstly, stress could contribute to weight gain through unhealthy eating habits. Unhealthy eating habits include consuming foods rich in fats, including sugars. All fast foods, such as burgers and fries rich in trans fat, could increase LDL cholesterol. This unhealthy fat affects the heart.

Hormones are also involved here. Cortisol released during stress affects the body’s ability to digest and absorb nutrients, affecting its overall health. Here, this chemical may increase the need for excess food consumption with more interest in having food according to one’s choice. This causes the adipose tissue to shift the fat deposition more into the abdominal region, leading to abdominal obesity

Moreover, having excess cortisol levels in the blood causes the body to produce less testosterone. This is a hormone found in the reproductive organs of boys and men. Studies have found that low amounts of this hormone lead to weight gain. This is done by increasing the fat in the abdomen. An increase in fat in the abdominal region could lead to obesity.   

Ghrelin is a peptide hormone produced by specialised cells in the stomach. This hormone has a role in driving food intake by communicating with the brain and the gastrointestinal tract for eating and ensuring efficient energy storage and metabolism. Hence, it maintains the overall energy homeostasis in the body. Stress could trigger the increased release of ghrelin, leading to increased appetite and cravings, particularly for foods high in fat and sugar. This could result in overeating and, as a result, weight gain. Thus, increased ghrelin levels due to stress could cause weight gain.

Also, there has been evidence indicating chronic social stress is leading to obesity. Chronic exposure to psychosocial stressors such as personal conflicts, low socioeconomic status, and stressful work environments, eg., high job demands, could contribute to weight gain and too much fat in the organs around your belly.

On the other hand, obesity or weight gain leading to stress could occur too. Ongoing studies have revealed the possibility of people suffering from obesity experiencing stress for a very long period. They also could have increased cortisol levels in their blood. 

Why do we eat more sugary foods during stress and how does it cause belly fat?

During stress-causing events, the body starts to indulge in consuming more sugary foods. This craving is a natural way to help with managing the ongoing threats from the environment. This includes consuming sugary foods as a form of reward or for self-soothing. However, too much of these sugary foods, especially those rich in fructose, leads to chances of rapid weight gain and stress. 

The microbial concentration in the gut also plays a role here. Recent studies have shown that consumption of diets high in sugar, high in fat, or both triggers changes in the gut microbial composition, which could lead to obesity. Hormones are also involved here. Stress-regulating hormones such as cortisol elevate blood sugar levels, quickly initiating insulin release to regulate glucose levels. This increased insulin levels could initiate fat storage, especially around the abdomen.
