When there is a stimulant in our environment, our body secretes stress hormones. These hormones energise the body to manage the stressors — blood sugar, blood pressure, heartbeat, and pulse rate increase. The body prepares to either fight or flee from the stressful situation. We always perceive stress as negative. But there can be benefits of stress too. In this article, we discuss whether stress can be positive.

What are the types of stress?

Though always thought to be negative, stress can also have positive implications. Research divides stress into four types:

  1. Eustress (good or positive stress): Even pleasure settings in life can induce stress. This is called positive stress. For example, you may experience your heart racing before going on stage to receive an award.
  2. Distress: When the situation is hazardous or painful, you experience negative stress. Job loss, the death of a loved one, and chronic illness are some examples of distress.
  3. Acute stress: It is a type of stress that lasts for a short time. For instance, stress that lasts from a few minutes to a few hours.
  4. Chronic stress: This type of stress lasts for a long time. For instance, stress that lasts for many hours in a day for weeks or months.

Can stress improve immunity?

Research suggests that one of the benefits of acute stress is improved immune response of the body. During injury or vaccination, the body must enhance its immunity for healing. At such times, short-term exposure to stress may increase immunity. The benefit is that the efficacy of the vaccine and wound healing may improve. Stress causes the transfer of immune cells to the wound. The release of chemicals (interleukins) increases the immune response. Stress may also lead to their release.

Does stress have a positive effect on brain power?

The stress intensity, trigger, and duration decide whether the impact of stress is good or bad. Scientists studied the correlation between stress and mental capacity. They found that mild stress can have some benefits as it may improve mental capacity. One of the positive effects of stress is enhancing memory. For instance, when students take a time-restricted exam, their brainpower becomes sharper.

Can stress benefit an employee during work?

An employee’s job-related stress may involve frustration, tension, or difficulty. We expect work-related stress to result in absenteeism, anxiety, or burnout. However, studies suggest that job stress can also have positive outcomes. It may increase performance, productivity, job satisfaction, and innovation

How can stress benefit students?

In a 2023 study, researchers suggested that stress helps students grow positively. When students experience difficulty, they may develop the capacity to bounce back from it. This resilience may develop whether students face positive or negative stress. Resilience is a person’s ability to adapt to and grow from a threatening situation. Thus, a positive aspect of stress is to help students adapt to a demanding academic life.
