Can I eat out during gestational diabetes?

If you are diagnosed with gestational diabetes, you can still dine out. However, you will need to be careful with your food choices and eating habits.

  • Do not go to a fast food outlet. Even if you try to choose healthy option at a fast food outlet, you will end up with something that is deep fried on your plate. Also, most of the fast foods are high on salt and fat which is harmful to you, especially in a condition of gestational diabetes.
  • Always order a salad and eat it. Green vegetables are good for health. They will also prevent you from over indulging in oily foods.
  • Avoid gravies or dips. Gravies contain the most oil. Dips are unhealthy too. They add on to your calories and can make your diabetes worse.
  • Do not order any sweetened drinks, cold drinks or alcohol. Even fruit juices or lemonades can spike your blood sugar. If you order tea, try to restrict the amount of sugar you add.

If you are careful about your eating habits, you can have fun eating out even with gestational diabetes.
