Gender selection through IVF is a controversial topic and is subject to legal and ethical regulations in many countries. In this article, we will discuss whether it is possible to choose the gender of a baby in IVF. We will also discuss whether it is legal to select the sex of a child. We will also examine some additional factors that should be considered for pre-implementation genetic diagnosis.

Is it possible to choose the baby’s gender in IVF?

Yes, it is possible to choose the gender with IVF. It is done through preimplantation genetic testing (PGT), or preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD)  which allows doctors to select embryos based on their gender.

PGT is a type of genetic testing which is done on embryos before they are implanted in the uterus. It involves removing a few cells from the embryo and testing them for specific genetic markers, such as the sex of the embryo.

If the parents want to choose the gender of their child and their country’s laws allow it, they can ask their doctor to test the embryos for the sex chromosome. If the embryo has an X chromosome, it will be a girl. Similarly, if the embryo has a Y chromosome, it will be a boy.

PGT is a relatively new technique, and it is not available in all fertility clinics. However, it is becoming more common, and it is an option for couples who want to choose the gender of their child.

Is it legal to select the sex of a child in India?

No. The sex-selective IVF is banned in India under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostics Techniques (PC-PNDT) Act. Even though Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) or PGT in India is legal, it can be used only to detect various genetic disorders in the embryo, like cystic fibrosis, thalassemia, and sickle cell anaemia, among others.

Are there any factors to consider for PGT?

Yes. There are a few factors which must be considered for PGT.

Risks: It can damage the embryo, and it can also increase the risk of miscarriage. Therefore, consult a doctor about the risks and benefits of PGT before you decide to have the procedure.

Cost: It is a relatively expensive procedure, and it is not covered by insurance. However, the cost of PGT can vary depending on the clinic and the type of testing that is done.

Success rate: It depends on a number of factors, including the age of the mother and the quality of the embryos. The success rate of PGT for gender selection is typically very high.

Ethical considerations of gender selection: There are some ethical concerns about gender selection. Some people believe that it is wrong to choose the gender of a child, while others believe that it is a personal choice.
