Uterine fibroids can cause various symptoms, such as excessive menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, etc. These symptoms can seriously affect a woman’s quality of life. In this article, we are going to discuss whether fibroids can cause abnormal bowel movements, such as constipation, and if yes, then how.

Does fibroid cause abnormal bowel movements?

Research published in the International Journal of Women’s Health found that more than 60% of women with uterine fibroids reported lower back pain and constipation/bloating/diarrhea. Another research also stated that various complications arise depending on the location of the fibroids. Women with fibroids may also experience constipation to chronic bladder and bowel spasms (spontaneous and sudden contraction of the muscles of the bowel).

Is constipation associated with fibroids?

Yes. In certain cases, fibroids can lead to the complication of constipation. A large portion of the large intestine, the rectum, which contains stool prior to having a bowel movement, is present behind the uterus. Sometimes, a fibroid can lead to the compression of the rectum. This compression can eventually cause problems with bowel movement, such as constipation. It can also cause Tenesmus, a condition in which a person feels that they need to have a bowel movement but are unable to.

How can fibroids cause constipation?

Fibroids are very hard and firm tumours. They press on whatever is next to them. Larger fibroids sometimes push against neighbouring organs like the bladder or bowel. This can cause an increased urge to urinate or digestion problems (constipation, pain). Fibroids present in the back of the uterus often press on the adjacent colon, leading to difficultor painful bowel movements or both. Fibroids can also lead to piles.

In most cases, fibroids causing constipation go undiagnosed. Doctors instruct the patients to drink more fluids and increase their fiber content. This may help in some cases. However, in most cases, it won’t help, and the patient will require the surgical removal of the fibroid.
