A fever is an indication of an underlying infection which can sometimes become complicated. But usually, fevers are part of the body’s immune response and do not always require treatment. Therefore, this article summarises the possibility and management of fever without medicine, as well as the symptoms that necessitate medical attention.

Is it possible to get rid of a fever without taking medicine?

Fever refers to an increase in body temperature above normal, which is usually a result of infection. The average body temperature is 37°C, but it can vary. Minor variations may also occur throughout the day. Most cases of fever resolve on their own within a few days.

But when the fever does not resolve on its own in a few days or fevers associated with conditions such as pneumonia, urinary tract infection or meningitis, malaria, dengue, typhoid or covid-19 require medical management.

How can I treat fever at home without the use of medication?

Feeling feverish can indicate that your immune system is responding to an infection. You can relieve fever gently with some home remedies. These remedies include drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated, getting ample rest, dressing in lightweight clothing, and utilising a light blanket if you are also experiencing the fever with chills.

When is it necessary to seek medical attention for a fever?

Most fevers go away on their own after a few hours to a few days as the body fights the infection. If the fever lasts more than a few days or does not appear to be getting better, consult a doctor. This is due to the fact that a regularly occurring or persistent fever, no matter how mild, may indicate an underlying condition that needs to be treated. If the fever is accompanied by difficult breathing, chest pain, severe headache, confusion, abdominal pain, skin rashes, or other bothersome symptoms, you will require medical care.
