What is a double vision?
Double vision, also known as diplopia, is a visual condition where a person perceives two images of a single object instead of a single clear image. These two images may appear side by side, on top of each other, or at an angle. Double vision can occur in one eye (monocular diplopia) or both eyes (binocular diplopia).
There are two main types of double vision:
- Monocular double vision: This occurs when double vision is present when only one eye is open. It is often caused by a problem within the eye itself, such as a refractive error, irregular cornea, or a specific eye condition.
- Binocular double vision: This occurs when double vision is present when both eyes are open. It is usually caused by misalignment or weakness in the eye muscles or a problem with the coordination between the two eyes.
Can cataracts cause double vision?
Yes, cataracts can cause double vision, also known as diplopia. This is because the clouded lens in a cataract can cause the eye to focus incorrectly, leading to two images of the same object appearing. Double vision is more likely to occur in one eye than in both.
The light coming into your eyes can be scattered by the cataract, causing double vision in that eye. I.e., the clouded lens can distort the image that is projected onto the retina. This can cause the brain to interpret the image as two separate images.
Also, the clouded lens can make it difficult for the eyes to focus on the same object. This can also lead to double vision.
The severity of the double vision depends on the size, sources of light as well as background illumination and location of the cataract. Sometimes, the double vision may be mild and only noticeable when looking at certain objects. In other cases, the double vision may be severe and make it difficult to see clearly.
