Is medical intervention always needed to cure ovarian cysts?
No. In most cases, a policy of “watchful waiting” is recommended for ovarian cysts. This means that no treatment is given to the patient if the patient is asymptomatic and not facing any issues. So, what the doctor recommends, in this case, is to get an ultrasound done after a few months to check if the cyst has resolved on its own. Remember, if the patient is post-menopausal, then the chances of an ovarian cyst curing on its own are scant. Also, the risk of ovarian cysts developing into ovarian cancer increases in post-menopausal women. So, here, ultrasound and blood tests are advised more frequently.
How are ovarian cysts cured?
Ovarian cysts often disappear independently in a few months without needing treatment.
If a woman needs treatment or not depends on certain factors, such as the size and appearance of the cysts, if the patient is symptomatic and if the patient is postmenopausal or not.
If the cysts are not cured on their own or they grow larger, then treatment is needed to shrink or remove the cyst.
In cases of recurrent ovarian cysts, the doctor prescribes oral contraceptives to stop ovulation, which eventually prevents the development of new cysts. These are also prescribed as they reduce the risk of ovarian cancer.
If these still don’t go away or if the woman is post-menopausal, then they are surgically removed. The surgical options include laparoscopy or laparotomy.
A laparoscopy is done if the cyst is small and non-cancerous. It involves your doctor making a tiny incision near your navel and inserting a small instrument into your abdomen to remove the cyst.
A laparotomy is done if the cyst is large, and there are chances of the cyst being cancerous. Through this procedure, the cyst and the ovary is surgically removed. Lastly, if the cyst turns out to be cancerous, then even a hysterectomy is an option as per the condition.
