Can I get cervical cancer if I have a history of the same in the family?
Cervical cancers mostly occur due to the infection caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). However, according to some researchers, there is an association between genetic variations and the development of cervical cancer.

Cervical cancer is a disease in which cancer or malignant cells develop in the tissues of the cervix. Here, we’ll learn whether cervical cancer is hereditary and which genes are involved in cervical cancer.

Is cervical cancer hereditary?

Sometimes. According to the World Health Organization, around 70% of cervical cancers are caused due to infection with human papillomavirus (HPV). However, a few types of cervical cancer can have a genetic component associated with them. Researchers claim that preclinical and genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have reported that genetic variations are associated with the development of cervical cancer. But there is a lack of consistency in these reports.

Cervical cancer may run in some families. If a woman’s mother or sister had cervical cancer, the chances of the condition are higher than women who don’t have a family history. Genetic epidemiological studies show that genetic factors contribute significantly to disease risk. Genetic susceptibility to HPV exposure and infection is crucial in determining the individual risk of developing this virally induced cancer.

In cases with genetic susceptibility, a woman may be at risk of developing such cancers if they have a genetic variant that increases their risk of cervical cancer. The risk can also increase if a close family member has a history or genetic association with cervical cancer. A risk factor for cervical cancer does not necessarily mean that a person will develop the disease. Such people are at an increased risk of getting cervical cancer.

Which genetic risk factors are associated with cervical cancer?

The two main genetic risk factors for cervical cancer are DICER1 syndrome and Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJs).

Research states that DICER1 syndrome (a genetic condition which causes mutations in the DICER1 gene) may increase the risk of various types of cervical cancer called cervical embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS) etc.

Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJs) is an inherited condition that increases the risk for developing hamartomatous polyps in the digestive tract, as well as cancers of the breast, colon and rectum, lung, cervix, etc. This genetic condition causes alterations in a tumour-suppressing gene called STK11. This cancer type accounts for around 1–3% of cervical adenocarcinomas, a rare type of cervical cancer.

Other novel mutated genes in cervical cancer include MED1, ERBB3, CASP8, HLA-A, and TGFBR2.
