Cervical cancer is most common among women in India. Yet the condition goes unnoticed in most women. A research paper published in 2012 has shown that approximately 365.71 million Indian women above 15 years of age are at risk of developing cervical cancer. India alone accounts for nearly one-third of global cervical cancer deaths. The most common risk factor of cervical cancer is human papillomavirus (HPV), which transmits sexually. It can lead to cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and invasive cervical cancer. In this article, we will discuss whether cervical cancer tumours can be felt or seen in general checkups.
Is cancer detected in routine general checkups?
It is possible. A routine pelvic examination can suspect a person of cancer. During a pelvic exam, the doctor evaluates reproductive organs. People often undergo regular pelvic checkups or exams on the recommendation of their doctors if there are symptoms of unusual vaginal discharge or pelvic pain. The doctor can ask you to get a PAP test after the pelvic exam if they suspect cervical cancer.
If a doctor suspects a person of cervical cancer, then a pelvic exam and a Pap test can be helpful to begin the examination for cancer. A PAP test can reduce the number of undiagnosed cases.
Is cervical cancer tumour be seen or felt in normal checkups?
Possible. In an advanced stage of cervical cancer, a growth formation can be visible during general physical checkups. However, it is not the case in the early stages. Cervical cancer often goes unnoticed during early stages because the condition often does not show any symptoms.
Within a few minutes of pelvic and vaginal examination, a doctor can confirm any abnormal growth by analysing the vulva, vagina, cervix, ovaries, uterus, rectum, and pelvis. However, the pelvic exam and PAP test together only help a doctor suspect a person of cancer and rule out any possibility. This health checkup procedure does not provide confirmatory results for every individual.
