Can you drink coffee if you suffer from chronic kidney disease?

Just In
Yes. Before consuming coffee, one should consider the amount, additives, blood pressure, and fluid intake. Because it may raise potassium levels, caffeine quantity, nutritional value, and inclusion in milk and creamers could be concerning for those with CKD. Caffeine and caffeine-induced mortality, however, are negatively correlated in CKD patients. Therefore, more research is required to demonstrate coffee's negative effects on the kidneys.

Yes. Before adding coffee to your diet, there are certain factors to consider, but coffee is not contraindicated in chronic kidney disease. The amount, additives, blood pressure, and fluid intake (if on restriction) are a few aspects that must be considered before consumption.

Research by Harvard showed an inverse association between caffeine and all-cause mortality among participants with CKD. No significant association was found between caffeine consumption and cardiovascular or cancer mortality.

The National Kidney Foundation says that coffee’s amount and nutritional content must be considered. A cup of black coffee has 116 mg of potassium (low potassium food). However, if one consumes three to four cups of coffee daily, your potassium levels can increase. Added creamers or milk can increase the potassium content further. Therefore, always consider the amount you consume.

Similarly, caffeine causes a short but sudden increase in blood pressure. Until now, research has not shown that drinking coffee increases the risk of kidney disease or the rate of kidney function decline. Remember, coffee affects all of us differently, so talk to your physician and registered dietitian about your coffee consumption.
