Why do growing-up changes start earlier for some kids than others?

Just In

Puberty is a natural stage of growing up, but sometimes these changes start earlier than parents expect. This is known as early puberty in kids, and it can raise many doubts and worries. You may notice your child looking or behaving older than their age, and that can feel confusing. Understanding why this happens, what signs to watch for, and how to support your child can make the journey easier.

What signs should parents watch for in early puberty in kids?

Many parents first notice small but important changes in their child’s body. For girls, this could be breast development before the age of 8, or periods starting too early. For boys, it may be an increase in body hair, voice changes, or rapid height gain before the age of 9. These changes are part of puberty, but when they start too soon, it is called early puberty in kids. Spotting these signs early helps parents understand when it may be time to seek medical advice.

How do lifestyle and environment play a role in early puberty in kids?

It’s not just hormones at work; everyday lifestyle and environment can speed up puberty. Research shows that childhood obesity, lack of physical activity, and processed food intake are linked with early puberty in kids. Exposure to chemicals found in plastics (like BPA) or even in certain cosmetics can also affect the delicate balance of hormones. Sakshi Singh, BSc (Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics) & MSc (Food and Nutrition) mentions, “In Indian cities, children are also exposed to fast food, reduced outdoor play, and early use of gadgets, which can all disturb natural growth patterns. Understanding these triggers doesn’t mean parents are at fault, but it gives them the power to make small, healthier choices for their children.”

How can parents support children going through early puberty in kids?

Dr Pallavi Sharma, MBBS, MD (Psychiatry), Consultant Psychiatrist at Fortis Escorts, New Delhi

Beyond physical changes, early puberty in kids can bring emotional struggles. A child may feel “different” from their classmates, leading to embarrassment or withdrawal. Girls may face teasing if they get periods too early, while boys may feel pressure to “act older” before they’re ready. Dr Pallavi Sharma, MBBS, MD (Psychiatry), Consultant Psychiatrist at Fortis Escorts, New Delhi, says, “Delayed puberty can be emotionally challenging for girls, impacting their self-image, confidence, and daily interactions. During this period, girls often feel left out when comparing themselves to their peers, which can lead to frustration and anxiety.  As parents, fostering resilience and self-assurance requires more than reassurance; it calls for proactive, sensitive support that encourages personal growth without isolating girls due to their developmental timing.”

Dr Sharma suggests, “Seeking professional guidance should be the cornerstone of parental support. Regular communication with healthcare professionals, such as paediatricians or endocrinologists, ensures parents are well-informed and children receive accurate explanations about their bodies. These experts can clarify whether the delay is a natural variation or if further medical evaluation is needed, lessening uncertainty.”

IDr Sharma adds, “In situations where emotional struggles arise, prompt referral to a psychiatrist can help girls process their feelings in a safe space, offering coping strategies and countering possible anxiety, depression or social withdrawal.”

Early puberty in kids is becoming more common today. The causes of early puberty may vary, from natural hormone changes in kids to environmental influences, but what matters most is how parents respond. By watching for signs, making healthy lifestyle adjustments, and supporting children emotionally, families can help their kids navigate these changes with confidence. Every child’s journey is unique, and parents should never feel alone in this process. Compassion, awareness, and timely support can make all the difference.
