Dr Rahul Desai, consultant diabetologist, says, “When it comes to managing gestational diabetes(GDM), low-impact exercises like walking, swimming, and yoga can all be beneficial, but they differ in effectiveness based on how they affect blood glucose control, cardiovascular fitness and insulin sensitivity.”

Walking is an aerobic exercise that improves glucose uptake by muscles, increases insulin sensitivity, and lowers post-meal blood sugar spikes.

Dr Desai recommends, “A 20–30 minute walk after meals can significantly reduce postprandial glucose levels. Multiple studies show walking helps reduce fasting and postprandial glucose levels in women with GDM. It’s one of the most recommended exercises by obstetricians due to its safety and accessibility.

Dr Desai also adds, “Timing matters when it comes to managing blood sugar through exercise during pregnancy, especially for women with gestational diabetes. The best times to walk or exercise for blood sugar management are after meals and or before breakfast. Blood sugar typically peaks 30–60 minutes after eating, so a 10–30 minute walk during this window can help lower post-meal glucose spikes and improve insulin sensitivity.”

What other exercises can help manage gestational diabetes safely?

Maintaining a healthy weight before pregnancy is the best way to reduce the chances of gestational diabetes. However, if you have GD, exercising and lifestyle changes, such as managing your meals, are still the best options you have. While walking is great, you can also try other gentle activities to support your body. Mixing up your routine can make it more interesting and benefit different parts of your body.  Here are a few exercises for gestational diabetes during pregnancy that are safe and helpful:

  • Prenatal Yoga: Helps with flexibility, breathing, and stress. It’s calming and improves sleep.
  • Swimming: It feels light on your body, reduces swelling, and supports your joints.
  • Stationary Cycling: If you’re used to cycling, indoor biking at a slow pace is safe.
  • Light Strength Training: Using light weights or resistance bands can help improve insulin use.
  • Manage cravings: Eat something healthier rather than their unhealthy substitutes. 

These options work different muscles and may help you feel more energised. Always check with your doctor before starting any new activity. However, it is advised to avoid any high-impact or risky ones like jumping, running, contact sports, or lifting heavy weights.

What are the ways to stay consistent with exercise for gestational diabetes when you’re tired or busy?

We understand that pregnancy is tiring, especially with gestational diabetes. You might feel low on energy or be juggling many responsibilities. But being active doesn’t have to be difficult. Here are some simple ways to stay consistent with exercise for gestational diabetes:

  • Break into smaller sessions: Do short 10-minute sessions, two or three times a day. Walk after meals or stretch while watching TV.
  • Make it part of your routine: Walk with your partner or a family member in the evening. Lighthouse work also counts as movement.
  • Use your space: If going out is tough, walk around your home, climb stairs slowly, or do a 5-minute prenatal stretch.
  • Track progress: Keep a small notebook or use a phone app to track how often you move. Seeing progress can boost your mood.

Also, remind yourself you’re doing this to care for both your baby and yourself. Even on tough days, small steps matter.

Exercise for gestational diabetes doesn’t have to be hard or scary. Start with walking, add what feels good, and avoid anything that feels unsafe. If you’re ever unsure, talk to your doctor. You’re already doing a lot, and every little movement is a win.
