Stroke and stress are closely related. If one is exposed to chronic stress, they may have a higher risk of getting a stroke. How does chronic stress contribute to stroke risk?

Chronic stress activates the body’s ‘fight-or-flight’ response, which produces hormones like cortisol and adrenaline. These hormones make the heart beat faster and blood vessels narrower, causing an increase in blood pressure. Persistent high blood pressure, or hypertension, is a key risk factor for stroke as it can easily damage the blood vessels leading to the possibility of either a clot or rupture.

Inflammation damages blood vessel walls. This may lead to the accumulation of plaques in arteries which is namely atherosclerosis. This restricts the blood flow to the brain, thus increasing susceptibility to ischemic stroke.

Dr Pradeep Rajanna, HOD & Consultant Emergency Medicine Department, Medicover Hospital, Telangana explains, “People with poor mental well-being are at a two times greater risk of strokes, particularly in middle-aged or older adults. Prolonged stress can cause the body to release hormones that can lead to the hardening of blood vessels and arteries which is linked to stroke.” Stress causes a rise in blood sugar and cholesterol. Both conditions lead to the risk of stroke. High sugar can damage the blood vessels over time. A high cholesterol level causes plaque inside the arteries.

Most people under chronic stress tend to engage in maladaptive coping mechanisms, which include smoking, alcohol consumption, overeating, and physical inactivity. Each of these activities increases the risk of stroke on its own, but when combined, they form a higher cumulative risk.

What stress management techniques can help reduce stroke risk?

They include strategies that manage stress; most of these reduce the patient’s chances of having a stroke because they reduce the inflammation and assist the blood vessels in managing the overall general function. The following are examples:

Mindfulness and Meditation: It might slow down the nervous system to lower the levels of cortisol and blood pressure levels. Recent research has continued showing that proper meditation cuts out stress significantly while developing proper heart functionality.

Regular Exercise: The endorphins associated with regular exercise, such as walking, jogging, or yoga, offset stress and lower blood pressure. Exercise also reduces inflammation and may improve cholesterol and blood sugar levels, which are very important in reducing stroke risk.

Deep Breathing Exercises: Techniques such as deep diaphragmatic breathing activate the body’s relaxation response, slowing the heart rate and lowering blood pressure. These can be handy at any time that stress arises.

Good Sleep Hygiene: A minimum of 7–8 hours of quality sleep per night can reduce stress as sleep disorders are associated with higher blood pressure and inflammation. Good sleep hygiene, such as keeping a regular sleep schedule, can support the recovery from stress.

Social Support and Counseling: High levels of social support reduce stress and promote healthy coping. Discussion with friends, family, or a therapist can be helpful for chronic stress and less reliance on unhealthy coping behaviours.

Furthermore, Dr Rajanna suggests these lifestyle changes to reduce the risk of stroke:

  1. The risk of stroke can be lowered by reducing blood pressure and cholesterol levels through a diet. A diet low in saturated fats, trans fats, and cholesterol and high in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables helps manage stroke
  2. Maintaining a healthy weight through regular physical activity, such as brisk walking, swimming, or cycling, can also help lower your blood pressure and improve your cardiovascular health.
  3. Smoking is the biggest risk factor for a stroke because smoking damages the blood vessels increases the blood pressure, and hastens the buildup of plaques in arteries.
  4. High intake of alcohol raises blood pressure and leads to overweighting, both of which increase the risk of a stroke.
  5. High blood pressure is the most dangerous risk factor for stroke, yet the risk of stroke may dramatically come under control through proper monitoring and control with diet, exercise, and medicine when necessary.
  6. Diabetes damages blood vessels and clots more easily to obstruct blood flow to the brain over time. Diet, exercise, and medication ensure healthy blood sugar levels and prevent stroke.

What role does mental health care play in reducing stroke risk?

Mental health care is essential as it deals with chronic stress, depression, and anxiety, all of which make one vulnerable to stroke risk. By managing mental health diseases, individuals will be able to have better control over stress. This will help their blood pressure go down, inflammation is minimal, and cortisol levels decline. Hence, reducing the vulnerability to stroke.

Other therapies include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), where a patient gets training to cope effectively. They cease to have unhealthy habits such as smoking or excessive eating that often come with stress and depression. Mental health care further promotes better sleep, a balanced mood, and a lifestyle that can protect cardiovascular health further.

By integrating mental health care into stroke prevention strategies, people equips themselves to positively manage their stress. Thus, building up mental and physical resilience. Both of these reduce the extent of stress on the heart and brain, reducing the chances of stroke.
