Skin allergy in rainy season: Prepare your skin for this monsoon

Just In

The wet climate doesn’t lead to any special skin allergies by itself; unusual conditions in this weather aggravate existing ones. Skin allergy in rainy season booms because of alleviated humidity and temperature. This creates a perfect environment for fungus to grow and thrive in our skin leading to allergies. However, we can protect our skin if we take proper preventive measures.

What are the most common types of skin allergy in rainy season?

The condition has already been linked with the itch, moving towards long-term scratching that can lead to eczema or certain skin disorders. Eczema is itchy skin that becomes red and inflamed.

Contact dermatitis can happen when some irritating substance or clothes come in direct contact with your skin. People, especially those wearing damp clothing or allergy sufferers might be more susceptible to irritants from wet clothes (especially if synthetic fabrics) and/or allergens such as mold spores.

Atopic dermatitis is a more severe form of eczema. It can increase from exposure to dust mites that become more active in monsoon. Symptoms include itchy, dry, and cracked skin.

Hives are raised, itchy welts that can appear and disappear suddenly within an hour. It can be triggered due to factors like pollen, mold, medications, etc.

Fungal infections such as athlete’s foot or ringworm can increase due to rain. They appear as itchy, red, and scaly patches on the skin often between ties and feet.

How to differentiate between a skin allergy and other common skin conditions like fungal infections?

It can be difficult to differentiate between a skin allergy and a fungal infection during rainy days as both cause itching and redness. Symptoms of skin allergies include itchy, red, and inflamed skin, hives (raised, itchy welts), dry, flaking skin (more likely to occur in eczema-prone ones), prick or burning sensation (in some cases), usually bilateral (on both sides of the body).

Whereas, the symptoms of fungal infections in rainy season include scaly, pink-red patches that itch. In some cases, blisters or pustules (small pus-filled bumps) may develop in the case of ringworm. ‘Athlete’s foot’ may cause cracked or peeling skin, and a burning sensation in some cases. Ringworm contains round-shaped lesions.

Any preventive measures to minimize the risk of skin allergy in the rainy season?

The monsoon season brings more humidity and dampness, creating an ideal breeding ground for allergens and fungal growth. It can lead to an increase in skin allergies. Luckily, there are several preventive measures you can take to minimize your risk:

Stay Dry: This might seem obvious, but avoid getting caught in the rain whenever possible. Wear rain gear and dry off completely as soon as you get indoors.

Foot Care: Pay extra attention to your feet during the rainy season. Dry them thoroughly after showering or bathing, and wear breathable shoes. Consider using an antifungal powder to prevent infections.

Shower After Getting Wet: If you do get caught in the rain, take a lukewarm shower and change into dry clothes as soon as possible.

Wash Clothes Regularly: Wash your clothes after wearing them, especially if you sweat a lot.

Strengthen Your Immune System: Eat a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to support your immune system.

Moisturize Regularly: Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated. This helps maintain a healthy skin barrier, making it less susceptible to irritants.

Avoid Irritants: Minimise contact with harsh soaps, detergents, and perfumes that can irritate your skin.

Dry Clothes Thoroughly: Don’t wear damp clothes and ensure they are dry before putting them on again.

Manage Humidity: Use dehumidifiers indoors to control moisture levels and prevent mold growth.

Diet: Eat a nutritious diet to maintain your allergy and overall health.

When should someone seek medical advice for a skin allergy that worsens during the rainy season?

Dr Ratnakar Shukla

Dermatologist Dr Ratnakar Shukla, Consultant in Dermagenix, Gorakhpur, UP says, “Someone should seek a dermatologist’s advice for a skin allergy that worsens during the rainy season when over-the-counter treatments or home remedies aren’t effectively managing symptoms. Additionally, it’s advisable to consult a dermatologist if the skin allergy is causing significant discomfort, spreading rapidly, or if there are signs of infection such as increased redness, warmth, or oozing from the affected area. A dermatologist can provide a proper diagnosis, prescribe stronger medications if needed, and offer advice on managing and preventing flare-ups in the future.”

Skin allergy in rainy season is another common issue. It irritates the skin and affects our lifestyle. However, if we take care of our skin, keep it dry, and take other preventive measures we can protect ourselves from these allergies.
