Is psoriasis contagious, or is it another myth?

Just In

If you or someone close to you has psoriasis, it’s natural to wonder, ‘Can I catch it from them?’ Many people feel confused or even scared when they see red, scaly patches on the skin. These thoughts are common, especially because skin problems often look infectious. But here’s the truth: psoriasis contaginous is a myth. Psoriasis cannot spread from one person to another. Let’s understand this better and clear the confusion once and for all.

Can touching or being close to someone cause psoriasis transmission?

Many people believe psoriasis is contagious and worry that it can pass through touch, hugs, or shared clothes. The good news is, you cannot catch psoriasis from anyone. It doesn’t spread through contact, food, water, or air.

Dr Gurman Bhasin, Dermatologist

Dr Gurman Singh Bhasin, Director & Chief Dermatologist, Skinclarity Clinic, Nagpur, explains, “Psoriasis is an autoimmune skin disease, meaning the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy skin cells. This causes the body to make new skin cells too quickly, leading to skin lesions and plaques, red, thick, scaly patches. These patches may look alarming, but they are not caused by germs or infection. There is no psoriasis transmission between people.”

Unfortunately, many people in India still think psoriasis is contagious and avoid people who have it. Global initiatives like World Psoriasis Day are observed to raise awareness about the issue. Still, this misunderstanding can deeply hurt those already struggling with the condition. So, if someone you know has psoriasis, show them kindness, not distance.

Why does psoriasis seem to spread on the skin if it’s not contagious?

Sometimes, people notice new red patches appearing in different areas and think psoriasis is spreading from one spot to another. This can be confusing. In reality, psoriasis spread happens inside the same person’s body, not from person to person.

The reason is immune dysfunction. When the immune system becomes overactive, it causes inflammation and speeds up skin cell growth. As a result, new patches appear, especially during flare-ups. This gives the illusion that psoriasis is ‘spreading,’ but it’s not contagious at all.

Scratching or injuring the skin can also cause new patches, a reaction called the Koebner phenomenon. But even this is limited to your own body. You cannot give psoriasis to anyone else, no matter how close they are.

Many people mistake psoriasis for fungal infections like ringworm, which are actually contagious. But psoriasis is completely different; it is not caused by fungus or bacteria and poses no risk of psoriasis transmission.

How can we support someone living with psoriasis without fearing it’s contagious?

Living with psoriasis can be emotionally challenging. The visible patches often attract unwanted attention or judgment. Some people may feel embarrassed or avoid social gatherings because others wrongly believe psoriasis is contagious.

What they need most is understanding and support. You can safely shake hands, hug, or share food with someone who has psoriasis. Your warmth and acceptance can make them feel less alone.

If you have psoriasis yourself, remember, it’s not your fault and not something you “caught” from anyone. Managing stress, protecting your skin, and following your doctor’s advice can help reduce flare-ups. Keep your skin moisturised and avoid scratching. Although psoriasis itself isn’t contagious, open wounds can sometimes get infected, and those infections can spread, so good skin care is important.

If people around you still believe psoriasis is contagious, gently explain that it’s an autoimmune skin disease, not an infection. Correcting these myths helps others see beyond the condition and treat those affected with empathy and respect.

Psoriasis contaginous is a myth. It’s not an infection, and it doesn’t pass from one person to another. What looks like psoriasis spread is actually due to immune changes inside the body, not contact with others. Remember, you can live, work, and share moments with someone who has psoriasis without fear. What truly heals is not distance, but understanding and compassion.
