Infant period: Why do newborn girls bleed?

Just In

When a baby is born, in addition to the excitement that comes with being a newcomer, there may also be unforeseen events that cause worries and questions. One such event that can be concerning for parents is vaginal bleeding among infant girls, which is also known as ‘mini periods’ or infant period. To offer more light and comprehension of the causes of vaginal bleeding in babies, we shall examine the notion of ‘mini puberty’ here.

What can cause an infant period?

Dr Charmi Shah

The main cause of infant vaginal bleeding is thought to be hormonal shifts that take place following delivery. Dr Charmi Shah, MS, OBGYN, & Laparoscopic Surgeon says, “This phenomenon is due to the withdrawal of maternal hormones that cross the placenta during pregnancy. The growing foetus is subject to higher concentrations of maternal hormones, such as estrogen, during pregnancy. The development of the baby’s reproductive organs is greatly driven by these hormones. After giving birth, though, a fast drop in hormone levels can cause physiological reactions in newborn females, like vaginal bleeding. This bleeding is a typical normal result of these hormonal swings otherwise known as ‘fake menses’ or ‘newborn uterine bleeding’.

When does the infant period usually occur in newborns?

Among newborn females, vaginal bleeding usually appears two to three days after delivery. Also, it can occasionally occur up to a week following delivery. Usually, there is only a small amount of bleeding, which appears as a few spots of blood along with vaginal discharge. Despite the discharge making it seem more serious, the bleeding is usually not enough to result in serious health issues like anaemia. Parents need to know that vaginal bleeding that doesn’t go away after a few days or if that appears with added symptoms, then the baby girl must find medical care immediately. Dr Shah says, “It typically occurs within the first few days to weeks of life and is considered normal. It’s important for parents to know about this occurrence to avoid unnecessary worry. However, if the bleeding is excessive or persists, it’s advisable to consult a pediatrician for further evaluation.”

What are some other signs of ‘mini puberty’ in newborns?

Baby girls bleeding after birth during ‘mini puberty’ is a well-known event. Babies also experience other typical symptoms that are indicative of the fleeting hormonal influence:

  • Vaginal Discharge (Neonatal Leucorrhoea): Newborn females may have a creamy discharge that is occasionally red. This vaginal discharge is a harmless, self-limiting occurrence. It usually goes away on its own over a few weeks with no help.
  • Labial Swelling: In female neonates, exposure to hormones may result in a brief swelling of the labia, which often goes away on its own in a few weeks.
  • Breast Development (Breast Buds): Because of their exposure to maternal hormones, neonates, both male and female, can develop breast buds. Breast buds can last for up to two months in female infants until they resolve. Although they often regress in male infants within two to three weeks.
  • Neonatal Galactorrhoea: Breast discharge, is a condition that affects newborns of both sexes, known as ‘witch’s milk’. This discharge is a temporary, benign condition that usually goes away on its own in 10 to 12 days.
  • Neonatal Acne: Often known as baby acne, is a condition that affects 20% of newborns. It can arise at any point during the first six weeks of life. This too usually goes away on its own by the time the child is two months old.

In conclusion, newborn vaginal bleeding, which is common in girls during ‘mini puberty’, is a natural result of hormonal changes post-delivery. While parents may be anxious at first sight, knowing the underlying causes and identifying relevant indicators of mini puberty can offer clarity and reassurance. It’s critical for parents to remain knowledgeable about their newborn’s growth and to note any unusual or persistent bleeding, as well as any other worrisome symptoms. Lastly, work closely with a doctor for such issues.
