Urinary tract infections (UTIs) happen by bacteria that enter the urinary tract and travel to the bladder, usually from the vaginal area. Does peeing after sex prevent pregnancy?

Peeing after sex benefits certainly has a contribution towards sexual health but urinating won’t help prevent pregnancy for women who are worried about getting pregnant. It takes effective birth control techniques, such as condoms or oral contraceptives, to stop unintended pregnancies. Similarly, urinating won’t become a hindrance to you getting pregnant. Pregnancy takes place when the sperm goes up the vagina and enter the fallopian tubes in order to become pregnant. The vagina and urethra are different pathways, and sperm goes through the vagina. Therefore, urinating will not impede their journey.

What about STIs and other infections?

Urinating after sexual activity can help remove bacteria that lead to urinary tract infections (UTIs), but it does not provide protection against STIs. Bypassing the urinary tract, the bacteria that cause STIs can enter the body through microscopic tears in the mucosal membranes. Therefore, urinating won’t stop STI-related bacteria from being taken in. Regular tests and the constant use of condoms during sexual activity are the most effective ways to lower the risk of contracting STIs.

Should men pee after sex too?

Men who urinate after sexual activity don’t necessarily gain from it, though there are no peeing after sex benefits for men. Men usually have longer urethras than women, which helps to reduce their risk of post-coital UTIs. Men’s UTIs are more frequently corresponding to health conditions such as kidney stones or an enlarged prostate.

In conclusion, even though it can seem like a small thing, women’s urinary tract health may greatly benefit from the process of urinating after sex. Systematic sexual health habits are essential for overall well-being and include using condoms and getting frequent screenings. Therefore, keep in mind the possible advantages of taking a post-coital trip to the toilet post sex. A little step can be a protective measure.
