How are pollution and air conditioning making urban Indians sicker?

Just In

If you live in a city and are already struggling with breathing issues, the air around you can feel heavy and tiring. Many of us think that staying indoors with the AC on protects us from pollution. But in reality, the combination of AC filters and indoor pollution can sometimes make our symptoms worse. Let’s understand this in a very simple and caring way.

How do AC filters and indoor pollution interact to affect the air you breathe at home?

In most Indian homes, the AC simply cools the air; it does not clean it fully. The basic filters inside standard ACs are designed to trap only large dust particles. They cannot catch finer, harmful particles from city pollution, like smoke, chemicals, and PM2.5 exposure in India.

This means the pollution from outside can still enter your home through doors, windows, or even gaps. Once inside, the AC keeps recirculating the same polluted air. So instead of getting relief, your breathing may feel heavier or irritated.

Muhammad Anas Ayoob

When the AC filter gets dirty (which happens quickly in dusty Indian cities), it can trap moisture, dust, and even fungus. This makes the air worse. So the combination of AC filters and indoor pollution can lead to coughing, a blocked nose, headaches, and eye irritation. Dr Muhammed Anas Ayoob, Pulmonologist, NMC Specialty Hospital, Abu Dhabi, UAE, says, “Air conditioners may worsen respiratory issues for people with breathing conditions such as asthma or COPD.”

Why does poor ventilation make pollution worse inside urban homes?

Most of us shut windows tightly to keep the room cool. But this creates poor ventilation, meaning fresh air does not enter, and dirty air does not escape. Over time, the room air becomes stale and low in oxygen.

The poor ventilation effects on health include:

  • Feeling tired or foggy in the head
  • Heaviness in the chest
  • Frequent throat irritation
  • Poor sleep

Pollutants from daily indoor activities add up too, cooking smoke, incense sticks, room fresheners, old mattresses, pet hair, and damp walls. Without ventilation, they stay trapped.

This may lead to long-term effects of poor air quality, such as recurring breathing infections, allergy flare-ups, sinus congestion, and slower recovery from illness. The indoor environment can sometimes be more polluted than outdoors, especially when the AC is used daily.

What simple steps can you take to protect your lungs while still using an AC?

You don’t need to stop using your AC. You just need to use it wisely.

Easy, low-cost steps:

  • Clean or wash your AC filter every 2–4 weeks (very important in Indian cities).
  • If possible, upgrade to a better filter rating or an AC that mentions “HEPA” or “PM2.5 filter”. You may also use an air filter with HEPA in your room, near your bed or workspace.
  • Allow some ventilation daily, open windows for just 5 minutes in the early morning or late evening.
  • Use exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathroom to push stale air out.
  • Keep your AC temperature between 24–26°C to reduce dryness and irritation.

Small changes in daily home habits can reduce the harmful impact of AC filters and indoor pollution and make breathing easier again.

You are not imagining your discomfort. In urban India, pollution from outside and stale air from indoors together make health conditions worse, especially when someone already has breathing problems. But with thoughtful use of your AC, regular cleaning, small ventilation habits, and awareness, your home air can become much kinder to your lungs.
