Herd immunity: Why does it matter for rabies?

Just In

When you’re worried about a dangerous disease like rabies, it’s natural to think first about your own safety and your family’s safety. But there’s also a bigger picture: protecting the entire community. One way scientists and doctors try to do this is through something called herd immunity. Let’s break it down in simple, everyday language so you can understand how it works, why it’s important, and what it means for diseases like rabies, without the confusing medical jargon.

How does herd immunity protect people who can’t get vaccinated?

Imagine a village where almost everyone has been vaccinated against a dangerous disease. If the virus or bacteria try to spread, they struggle to find someone who isn’t protected. That’s herd immunity, when enough people are immune, the disease can’t travel easily, which protects even those who are not vaccinated.

This is especially important for people who can’t get vaccinated, such as newborn babies, pregnant women, or people with serious health problems. They depend on others around them to act as a shield.

For rabies, while vaccination in humans is mostly after exposure, vaccinating dogs (the main source of rabies in India) can create a protective barrier for people. Herd immunity in dogs means fewer rabies cases in humans.

Can herd immunity work for diseases like rabies in humans and dogs?

Rabies is a bit different from diseases like measles or COVID-19 because it’s almost always spread from animals to humans. In India, over 90% of human rabies cases come from dog bites. So, herd immunity in dogs is the real game-changer here.

If 70% or more of the dogs in an area are vaccinated against rabies, the virus can’t spread easily among them. This means fewer infected dogs, which directly means fewer people at risk. It’s not about making every single person immune, but about cutting off the source before it reaches humans.

For humans, post-exposure vaccination after a dog bite is still the best safety net. But when combined with large-scale dog vaccination, it creates a powerful double layer of protection. Dr Vivek Arora, BVSc & AH, MIVIS, Veterinary Expert, Delhi, suggests pet parents to get their dogs vaccinated before it is 3 months old if they are not aware of the vaccination history of the puppy. After that, get booster shots within 4 weeks after the first dose. When your dog is done with both doses, get it vaccinated once a year to protect them against rabies.”

What can India learn from past experiences with herd immunity, like during COVID-19?

During COVID-19, we heard a lot about herd immunity. Many hoped that if enough people got infected or vaccinated, the virus would fade away. But the reality was more complicated; new variants kept appearing, and immunity from infection or vaccines sometimes faded.

The lesson for rabies? Relying only on natural infection to build herd immunity is dangerous and deadly. For rabies, this is not even an option; the disease is almost always fatal once symptoms appear. The only safe way is through planned vaccination programs.

Herd immunity in India for rabies will need a strong mix of:

  • Regular, large-scale dog vaccination drives.
  • Public awareness so people know to get immediate post-bite treatment.
  • Government and community support for stray dog vaccination.

If India can vaccinate enough dogs consistently and spread education against common rabies myths, we can save thousands of lives each year and protect communities without waiting for tragedy to strike.

Herd immunity isn’t just a scientific term; it’s about community protection, compassion, and responsibility. Whether it’s COVID-19, rabies, or any other dangerous disease, the idea is the same: when enough of us are protected, we protect those who can’t protect themselves.

For rabies in India, herd immunity in dogs is our strongest shield. By supporting vaccination programs and staying alert after animal bites, we can keep both people and pets safe.

Because in the fight against deadly diseases, protecting each other is the best medicine we have.
