During sleep, tear secretion and corneal epithelial regeneration occur, both of which are critical for ocular surface homeostasis. Sleep deprivation leads to decreased tear secretion, increased tear osmolarity, and inflammation, resulting in dry eye symptoms such as burning, grittiness, and redness. Moreover, you might also notice your eyes twitching or fluttering uncontrollably. This happens because tired eye muscles and nerves misfire when they don’t get enough rest. Redness and swelling around the eyes often occur due to blood vessel dilation resulting from fatigue and dehydration. ”

In short, sleep gives your eyes time to refresh. Without it, they’re constantly overworked, leading to irritation, strain, and discomfort that can worsen over time.

Can poor sleep harm your vision in the long run?

It’s easy to think that lack of sleep only causes temporary issues, but repeated sleepless nights can lead to more serious lack of sleep eye problems.
