A milestone was achieved in international medical collaboration on date 22 July 2025, with the world’s first intercontinental telesurgery performed between India and France using a made-in-India surgical robot. The historic procedures were conducted during the Annual Conference of the Society of Robotic Surgery (SRS) in Strasbourg, France. Two complex surgeries—a robotic gastric bypass and a robotic atrial septal defect closure—were successfully executed using the SSI Mantra Surgical Robotic System, developed by SS Innovations International, Inc.
The surgeries connected teams across nearly 10,000 kilometres—from the IRCAD Headquarters in Strasbourg to the Sri Aurobindo Institute of Medical Sciences (SAIMS) and the IRCAD National Centre in Indore, India. The event demonstrated the system’s capabilities in delivering high-precision intercontinental telesurgery, highlighting the potential of surgical robotics to transcend geographic limitations.
Two Complex Procedures Performed Over 10,000 Kilometres
Dr. Mohit Bhandari, President of IRCAD India and Founder of Mohak Bariatrics and Robotics, Indore, performed the robotic gastric bypass in just over 44 minutes without complications. The procedure underscored the precision and stability of the made-in-India surgical robot during remote operations.
The second procedure, a robotic atrial septal defect closure, was carried out by Dr. Sudhir Srivastava, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of SS Innovations. The live telesurgery was moderated by Dr. Husam H. Balkhy, M.D., a global expert in robotic cardiac surgery and Director at the University of Chicago Medicine. On-ground support in Indore was coordinated by doctors from SAIMS and Manipal Hospital, Jaipur, ensuring patient-side readiness.
The SSI Mantra system operated with imperceptible latency and precise control throughout both procedures. The event reinforced the growing role of intercontinental telesurgery in modern surgical practices.
SSI Mantra’s Role in Remote Surgical Innovation
The SSI Mantra, a made-in-India surgical robot, is the first such system to receive CDSCO approval for both telesurgery and tele-proctoring in India. Its performance in procedures such as the robotic gastric bypass and robotic atrial septal defect closure has shown that complex surgeries can be conducted remotely with reliability and efficiency.
So far, over 35 telesurgeries have been completed using the system—including 10 cardiac cases—and more than 250 cardiac procedures in total. Additionally, over 5,000 multi-specialty surgeries have been performed using the SSI Mantra, with no device-related adverse events reported.
This development signifies a critical advancement in intercontinental telesurgery made possible by a made-in-India surgical robot, marking a new chapter in the future of accessible and high-precision surgical care.
