Sarvodaya Hospital, Faridabad conducted Keyhole spine surgery

Surgeons at Sarvodaya Hospital in Faridabad, Sector-8, have achieved a significant milestone by performing North India’s first Oblique Lumbar Interbody Fusion at L5S1 (OLIF51) surgery. The groundbreaking procedure was conducted on a 63-year-old patient, who had been enduring severe sciatica pain, lower back issues, and mobility difficulties due to degenerative scoliosis and lumbar canal stenosis. OLIF51, a minimally invasive keyhole spine surgery technique provided immediate relief from pain and restored his ability to walk, demonstrating the hospital’s commitment to pioneering medical advancements and enhancing patient care.

The surgery was conducted in two stages by two teams of surgeons headed by Dr Ashish Tomar, Senior Consultant – Orthopedics & Spine Surgery, and Dr Ved Prakash, Sr. Consultant – Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery. The initial phase of the procedure involved performing a three-level OLIF (Oblique Lateral Interbody Fusion) on the vertebrae from L3 to S1 while the patient was positioned on their side. In the subsequent phase, pedicle screws were inserted above and below the fused vertebrae to provide additional stability and reinforcement for the fusion. A rod was utilized to connect the screws, preventing any motion and facilitating the healing process of the bone graft.

While talking about the surgery, Dr Akash Tomar explained, “The surgery required special retractor systems and top-notch surgical skills as it was conducted between the bifurcation of great vessels and other delicate structures.” Dr Ved Prakash further informed, “This procedure is characterised by its minimally invasive nature, involving smaller incisions that lead to reduced discomfort, minimized blood loss, faster recovery, and the absence of post-operative back pain. Additionally, this approach avoids any disruption to the muscles, ligaments, and nerves located at the posterior of the spine, which contributes to the enhanced restoration of spinal balance.”
