A well-known Indian actress, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, is reported to be taking a break from her work. In October 2022, the actress discussed her diagnosis of Myositis on social media. In her post, she said, ‘A few months back I was diagnosed with an autoimmune condition called Myositis. I was hoping to share this after it had gone into remission.” She further said that the recovery was taking time. According to recent reports, Samantha Ruth Prabhu plans to prioritise her health and intends to pursue further treatment for myositis during the break. This has yet again kicked off the discussion about myositis.

What is myositis?

Among the general population, myositis is relatively unfamiliar or less recognised. After Samantha Ruth Prabhu came forwards to discuss her condition, myositis gained attention. Myositis refers to a collection of rare health conditions that impact muscle function. It is characterised by muscle inflammation, leading to weakness and impaired mobility of the affected muscles. There are two types of myositis – primary and secondary.

General Physician

Dr Kashyap Dakshini, General Physician, explained, “Primary myositis is referred to as dermato-myositis, an inflammation of the skin as well as the muscles. Since it is an auto-immune disease, the immune system of the body starts attacking the muscles of the body. In secondary myositis, there can be various other causes, like infections, drugs, rheumatological diseases or malignancies. Various bacterial, viral, fungal or parasitic infections can also cause secondary myositis.”

Symptoms and diagnosis of myositis

Given that myositis involves muscle inflammation, it manifests through symptoms like:

  1. Difficulty in standing up from a seated position or rising from the floor
  2. Swallowing difficulties
  3. Proximal muscle weakness, primarily affecting the muscles near the body’s core, such as the shoulders, thighs, etc.

Explaining the diagnostic process, Dr Dakshini said, “Clinicians don’t commonly think of myositis as a straightforward diagnosis except for a rheumatologist, as it is their speciality. So, myositis is not a part of the first list of differential diagnoses, and so it remains undiagnosed in about 95% of patients suffering from myositis.”

Recognising the importance of seeking help

To deal with such health conditions, it is crucial to understand and educate ourselves. The symptoms can get worse with time, so it is extremely important to consult a doctor and seek help if you experience any symptoms of myositis.
