Penile fracture: Is it possible?

Just In

Penile fracture is a painful condition that needs immediate treatment. In order to avoid long-term consequences, it is vital that you get treatment as soon as it happens. Although the phrase ‘penis fracture’ may bring up pictures of shattered bones, it actually describes a serious injury to the penis’ erectile tissue. Let’s dive a little deeper into this serious condition.

What is a penile fracture?

A penis has three basic structural foundations. This consists of two corpora cavernosa that fill with blood during an erection and the urethra. A penis fracture happens when there is sufficient force applied to the erect penis. This ruptures the erectile tissue. This injury can cause excruciating pain. In order to prevent irreversible harm, it needs to be treated right away.

What are the symptoms of penile fracture?

Early diagnosis and treatment of this fracture depend on the ability to recognize their signs. Typical indications include the following:

  • Bent penis
  • Blood oozing from the penis
  • Unexpected loss of erection
  • Intense pain following damage
  • Dark bruises over the affected area
  • Having trouble urinating

In the event that you encounter any of these signs following a sexual injury, get help right away.

What are the causes of penile fracture?

Forceful bending of the erect penis usually results in blunt force trauma, which causes penile injuries. Typical reasons include:

Avreen Singh Shah (Urologist)
  • “Engaging in sexual activity, particularly in poses where the penis comes out and presses on the perineum or pelvis bone. This fracture can also result from specific sexual positions, such as woman-on-top because of the force that applies to the erect penis”, says Dr Avreen Shah, Consultant urologist at Shah Hospital Advanced Laparoscopic Gynae and Urology Centre, Ludhiana, Punjab.
  • Excessive masturbation.
  • Unintentional falls onto an erect penis or bumping into hard objects.
  • Common practices in certain societies, such as ‘Taqaandan’, which involves bending the erect penis.

What is the difference between penile fracture and avulsion penile trauma?

In contrast to penis fractures, which cause the erectile tissue to burst, avulsion penile traumas result in the skin of the penis being taken away. Avulsion injuries usually happen in industrial accidents. The major difference is that the skin remains intact in penis fractures.

Can penile tissue heal on its own?

Allowing this fracture to heal on its own is not advised. In the absence of appropriate medical care, there’s a chance that the penis could recover unevenly. It may also lose its ability to urinate and have sexual intercourse. In order to secure the best possible results and correct the harm, surgery is frequently required.

What are the treatment options?

Surgical intervention is usually necessary after this fracture’s diagnosis. The goal of the approach is to heal the torn tissue and return it to its normal state. Patients may need to stay in the hospital after surgery for observation, at that point they will be given painkillers and antibiotics to avoid infection. It may take a few months for a full recovery. Also, in order to promote appropriate healing, avoid sexual activity during this period.

Although a penis fracture may seem serious, the prognosis is usually good if it receives the right care and attention from medical professionals. Effective management of this disorder requires recognizing the symptoms, comprehending the reasons, and pursuing immediate action. Do not wait to seek medical attention if you think you may have a penile injury.
