Mumbai, September 2025 — In a major move for India’s medical education landscape, the Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has secured approval to establish a 50-seat medical college in Andheri East, Mumbai.
The Mumbai Medical Education Department has granted ESIC permission to set up the college on the premises of the ESIC Hospital in Andheri. The first batch of MBBS students will be admitted in the 2025–26 academic year, with annual tuition fees pegged at ₹24,000, one of the most affordable rates for a government-affiliated institution.
This will mark the first central government organisation medical college in Mumbai. In parallel, the centre has also approved another 50-seat medical college at GT Hospital.
ESIC regional director Abhilasha Jha confirmed the plan. The ESIC complex in Andheri currently houses a 300-bed hospital, of which 100 beds are operational. The remainder of the facility is being readied, with campus construction and interiors expected to be completed by December. This initiative gains further significance given Mumbai’s existing government and civic medical colleges at Nair, KEM, Sion, Cooper, and JJ hospitals. The new ESIC medical college aims to strengthen healthcare education infrastructure and address the doctor shortage in India’s most populous state.
