Does your child need multivitamins? Separating facts from fads

Just In

Parents do want the best for their children, particularly regarding health and nutrition. Multivitamin supplements are widely advertised as an easy solution to making sure a child is nutritionally complete. However, does your child need multivitamins? And if so, why? Let’s take a look at what experts have to say about multivitamins for children.

Why do we need multivitamins?

Multivitamins are supplements that usually carry a combination of the key vitamins and minerals such as vitamin A, B-complex, C, D, E, K, iron, zinc, iodine, and calcium. They come in several forms—chewables, gummies, liquids, and tablets—and are frequently designed around age brackets.

Garima Dev Verman, Dietitian and Certified Diabetic Educator, MSc Food and Nutrition, Delhi, explains, “The purpose of these supplements is to bridge the nutritional shortfall in the diet. Several brands introduce themselves as immune stimulants, brain boosters, or energy givers for children. But let’s make a note that multivitamins are not an alternative to a balanced diet. The body is best able to absorb nutrients from whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, dairy, whole grains, and proteins.”

When are multivitamins actually needed in children?

Aayushi Agarwal, Certified Dietician & Diabetes Educator, Jharkhand

Aayushi Agarwal, Certified Dietician & Diabetes Educator, Jharkhand, says, “While the notion of providing multivitamins as a preventative measure may be attractive, healthy children who consume a balanced diet do not require supplements. According to health organisations such as the American Academy of Paediatrics (AAP), kids should obtain their nutrition mainly from food.”

There are some instances, though, when multivitamins or special supplements may be helpful or even essential:

Picky eaters: If a child regularly refuses healthy foods, they could be losing out on important nutrients.

Children with dietary restrictions: Children on vegan or vegetarian diets can be at risk of needing supplementation with vitamin B12, iron, calcium, or vitamin D.

Health conditions: Certain children with chronic disease, gastrointestinal disorders (such as celiac or inflammatory bowel disease), or those on prolonged drug therapy may have difficulty absorbing nutrients.

Poor growth or developmental delays: In these cases, paediatricians can suggest supplementation as part of an overall treatment regimen.

Kamna Chauhan, Dietitian

Kamna Chauhan, Dietician, mentions, “Although multivitamins can be of help to a child’s immunity, they still can’t be considered as a replacement for a balanced diet. A diet that is well-rounded with lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats provides the necessary nutrients—such as vitamins A, C, D, E, zinc, and iron—that are the energy needed for the immune system to work efficiently.”

Kamna suggets, “In the majority of healthy children, this combination of diet is sufficient to cover all their nutritional needs and hold their immunity at a high level. On the other hand, in instances where the child is a fussy eater, or if he/she is on a restricted diet, or if he/she has a deficiency of nutrients that is caused by a health problem, giving him/her multivitamins might be a good idea to cover the lack that is diet—not to replace it.”

What signs should parents look for before starting their child on multivitamins?

Aayushi recommends parents to look for these two signs in their children before considering multivitamins for them:

  1. Frequent colds, fatigue, poor appetite, or pale skin hint at underlying deficiencies.
  2. If a child’s diet lacks variety (no fruits, greens, or protein), supplementation may be required.

The dangers of excessive supplementation

It’s simple to think that a bit of added nutrition can’t possibly harm, but excessive supplementation in kids can actually harm more than help.

Vitamin overdose: Fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K are known to build up in the body and cause toxicity if taken in high doses. Signs and symptoms can range from nausea, headaches, and fatigue to full-blown organ damage in extreme cases.

Hiding behind a bad diet: Counting on multivitamins may create false reassurance for parents, while the child still consumes an unbalanced or unhealthy diet. Overuse can mask serious health issues like anaemia or malabsorption disorders.

Bad dental health: Several gummy vitamins contain added sugars, which can lead to tooth decay.

Allergic reactions or adverse effects: Some children could get upset stomachs, constipation, or allergies to specific ingredients.

Nutritionist

Administering supplements when they’re not necessary can also disrupt the way a child’s body absorbs nutrients from the diet or medication they’re on. Nidhi Sarin, Clinical Nutritionist & Diabetic Educator, Telangana, emphasises, “The bottom line is: Always talk to a doctor before giving any supplement to your child. Only a medical professional can decide if your child truly needs a nutritional deficiency.”

Final thoughts

Multivitamins can be helpful in specific situations, but for most healthy kids with access to a nutritious diet, they are not necessary. Whole foods remain the best and safest source of essential nutrients. Before giving your child a supplement, talk to your paediatrician to assess their individual needs.

Rather than climbing on the multivitamin bandwagon, concentrate on developing healthy eating habits, providing an assortment of foods, and engaging children in mealtime practices. That’s the secret ingredient to long-term wellness—and a whole lot cheaper than a shelf of supplements.
