Childhood bones health: How to catch trouble before it’s too late

Just In

Healthy bones during childhood set the stage for healthy bones throughout a person’s life. Yet many of the early warning signs and symptoms of unhealthy or weak bones in children are subtle and don’t become apparent until a deformity or a fracture happens.

Knowing the risk factors of unhealthy childhood bones and the early warning signs is important in preventing long-term complications such as osteoporosis later in life. This article examines nutritional deficiencies, genetic factors, and when to get medical attention.

Nutritional gaps that affect bone strength

Garima Dev Verman, Dietitian and Certified Diabetic Educator, MSc Food and Nutrition, Delhi, says, “Nutrition is a key component in the development of bones, particularly during growth spurts in early childhood and adolescence. Bones consist mostly of calcium and phosphorus, and Vitamin D plays a crucial role to help the body absorb calcium

If a child does not receive sufficient calcium, in dairy foods, leafy greens, and fortified foods, the body will withdraw calcium from the bones, causing them to become weak over time.”

Garima also adds, “Likewise, a lack of vitamin D, prevalent in children who have little sun exposure, may result in rickets, a disease that creates soft and weak bones, bowed legs, and slow growth. Another essential yet frequently neglected nutrient is protein. Protein establishes the foundation for bone structure and interacts with calcium and other minerals. A diet poor in these can quietly undermine bone density, predisposing it to even minor fractures.”

Family history and genetic factors

Though lifestyle and diet are important, genetics also have a big impact on bone formation. children can be at greater risk for developing bone-related conditions if there is a family history of diseases such as osteoporosis, osteogenesis imperfecta (a genetic condition that results in brittle bones), or early-onset arthritis.

Some chronic diseases like juvenile arthritis, celiac disease, and inflammatory bowel disease, also disrupt nutrient and bone formation. Additionally, long-term medication takers like corticosteroids (taken to treat asthma or autoimmune diseases) may have a reduced bone mineral density as an adverse effect.

It should be noted that children can have normal blood calcium levels but still have low bone density. In this situation, a DEXA scan (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) might be required to better determine bone strength.

When to visit a pediatrician or have tests performed

Most of the warning signs of poor bone health in children are easy to overlook. Be aware of the following signs:

  • Recurring fractures, particularly from low-impact falls
  • Bone or joint pain that is not the result of injury
  • Short stature or growth retardation
  • Bowed legs or other bone deformities
  • Delayed walking or motor skills

If you observe any of these signs, it’s time to see a pediatrician. The physician might suggest blood work to test for calcium, vitamin D, phosphorus, and parathyroid hormone levels. In certain situations, imaging such as X-rays or a DEXA scan can be required to evaluate bone density and identify structural problems.

Early intervention is important. Pediatricians can prescribe supplements or dietary modifications, suggest physical therapy, or refer to a pediatric endocrinologist or orthopedist for more specialized treatment.

Conclusion

Childhood bone health is an important but frequently neglected aspect of overall development. With proper nutrition, knowledge of family history, and monitoring for early warning signs, parents and caregivers can assist children in developing healthy bones that last a lifetime. Early medical care can head off complications and promote healthy development, so never disregard recurring bone or joint problems in children. With proper care, it’s possible to catch trouble early—and put a stop to it before it begins.
